May 23, 2023 - Fly to Okeechobee for Breakfast

Bruce and I hopped into the RV-7 and took off around 8AM or so.  Destination:  Okeechobee County Airport (OBE).  Okeechobee has an on-field restaurant and a low Avgas price.  Plus I've never been there.  What more could you ask for?

The weather was excellent this morning.  Rain showers and thunderstorms were forecasted for later in the day.

Here we are flying over a thin wispy scattered but pretty layer.

Okeechobee County Airport in sight.  It's a big one.

Safe on deck with the FBO building and restaurant in the background.  Self-service fuel pumps are at right.  The price, an incredible $4.87.  You better believe I filled up.  It's been a very long time since I have paid under $5 for Avgas.

A closer look at the FBO building.  The restaurant is on the left side.

Not a big place, but the breakfast was excellent and the price surprisingly low.

I wonder what the story is on this moss-covered, abandoned business jet is?

Heading back to Sebastian, we checked out Bruce's home airport New Hibiscus (X52) -- the wide grass strip below -- from the air.

Notice the clouds are building.

Back at Sebastian we met Jeff at his hangar and I took him for a ride in the RV-7.  I've been in Jeff's Cessna 210 Centurian a couple of times.  Jeff is thinking about buying an RV.

Unfortunately, we only got to do a quick flight over the beach, when we noticed a huge rain storm coming up from the south.  We decided to cut the flight short and land.  But there was not enough time.  I got caught in a heavy downpour while tying down the plane and was completely soaked!
